Background

The Central Department of Zoology (CDZ), Tribhuvan University and Alumni Association of the CDZ successfully organized First National Conference on Zoology: Biodiversity in a Changing World on 28-30 November 2020 on the occasional of 55th Anniversary of the department. This year on the occasion of the 56th Annual Day of the department, the CDZ-TU and AACDZ are planning to organize International Conference on Zoology 2021: Himalayan Biodiversity in the Face of Global Change on 29 November - 01 December 2021. During the epidemic prevention and control period, the conference will be organized virtually.

The biodiversity and ecosystem services have been severely affected due to global change and rapidly increasing anthropogenic activities, where many species are about to extinction. Climate change, overexploitation of natural resources, loss of biodiversity and release of pollutants to the environment have severely affected planetary and species health as well as the livelihood of people. A sustainable approach to manage the faunal resources has become inevitable for present and future generations. International Conference on Zoology 2021: Himalayan Biodiversity in the Face of Global Change (ICZ 2021) is the general Zoology conference, which will incorporate all aspects Zoology, and not particular sub-disciplines only.

ICZ 2021 is a conference of zoology, with special focus on the biodiversity of the mountain system of the world and particularly on the Himalayan Region, which supports rich biodiversity providing ecosystem services that benefit over a billion people. Global mountain systems are rich repository of biodiversity and sources of ecosystem services that reaches far beyond the geographic limits. Almost half of the world’s populations are benefited from the mountain systems for water, biodiversity, medicines, forest products, recreation, etc. Therefore, mountains have an important role in the maintenance of ecosystem functions and services, biodiversity conservation and promotion sustainable livelihood of the people.

Himalaya, the third pole of the earth, is under severe threats of anthropogenic climate change and its consequences. Himalayan biodiversity faces growing challenges due to global change, the growing demand for resources, the dynamic geology, the growth in tourism, and the pressures of industry and agriculture. As a result of changes in habitat, ecosystem structure and function, Himalayan fauna are threatened more rapidly than elsewhere.
